PLANNING · CHOOSING A TREK

How to choose your trek

Seven honest questions that point you to the right route — no upselling, no guesswork.

There is no single “best” trek in Nepal — only the one that fits you. The right choice balances how much time you have, how fit you are, how high you’re comfortable going, and what kind of experience you’re after. Here’s how we help travellers narrow it down.

1 · How many days do you have?

Your trip length decides more than anything. Short on time (5–8 days)? Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, Pikey Peak or Langtang. Two weeks opens up Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit. Three weeks or more unlocks remote routes like Manaslu, Kanchenjunga, Dolpo and the Great Himalayan Trail.

2 · How fit are you, honestly?

You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking 5–7 hours a day on uneven ground for many days in a row. Most treks are graded gentle, moderate or strenuous — we’ll always tell you the truth about which one you’re ready for.

3 · How high do you want to go?

Altitude, not distance, is the real challenge in Nepal. Treks under 3,500 m are forgiving. Anything above 5,000 m (EBC, Thorong La, Three Passes) demands proper acclimatisation days built into the itinerary — which ours always have.

4 · Teahouse or camping?

Most classic routes are teahouse treks — you sleep in simple mountain lodges with hot food and a bed. Remote regions (Dolpo, parts of the GHT) are camping treks, fully supported by our crew. Teahouse is easier and cheaper; camping takes you where almost no one goes.

5 · Which season suits you?

Autumn (Oct–Nov) and spring (Mar–May) are the classic windows — clear skies, stable weather. Winter is quiet and cold but beautiful at lower altitude. Monsoon (Jun–Aug) suits the rain-shadow regions of Mustang and Dolpo. See our Best time to visit guide for a month-by-month breakdown.

6 · What’s your budget?

Teahouse treks are the most affordable; remote camping and peak climbing cost more because of permits, crew and logistics. We quote everything transparently — no hidden extras — so you can compare like for like.

7 · What do you want to feel?

Some travellers want the icons — Everest, Annapurna. Others want solitude, culture, or to learn a skill. Tell us the feeling you’re chasing and we’ll match the trail to it, including our Teach & Learn and Yoga & Trek journeys.

Not sure yet? That’s exactly what we’re here for. Send us your dates, fitness and what you’re hoping to experience, and our coordinator will suggest two or three routes that genuinely fit — not the most expensive ones.
